The Gathering Room
The project was to add a 480 square foot addition to create a new, bigger kitchen, add a powder room, and sitting area with a fireplace. A walk-in closet was added to the master bedroom. The exterior was re-sided with vinyl and stone. The roof and skylight were replaced. A masonry patio was added in the backyard to replace the old wood deck. The front porch wood railing and posts were replaced with vinyl.

Gathering room addition off the back of a Cape
The goal was to create a “gathering room†for a family that enjoys cooking and entertaining. In the process we renovated all of the exterior and much of the interior to update the home.
The home is on a slab and the property grade is the low point in the area and the water table is high. The existing first floor heating system was hot water radiant heat which would need to be continued into the new slab. Also challenging was to achieve to clients’ wish list while maintaining a realistic budget.
Underground drainage was added in and around the new masonry patio in the backyard. The attic area of the 1st floor addition became a 150 square foot walk-in closet for the master bedroom. We made use of a return wall between the kitchen and sitting room areas to place a desk from cabinetry for a home-office space work station. A doggie door was incorporated into the design for “Bella†their Black Lab.
We used Andersen 400 series windows and a French sliding patio door. The retaining walls are Anchor Concrete blocks. The fireplace wall and front porch wall are covered with Owens Corning Cultured Stone. The vinyl railings and posts are from Fairway. The siding featured Cedarway vinyl shakes. The roof shingles are from GAF. The skylight is a Velux. The patio is made with Anchor Concrete products. The kitchen cabinets are Starmark and Homecrest.
